Conservation

I will admit the subject of conservation has never really entered my mine… until now!  Live and learn.  On this Island, conservation is especially important, for several reasons.  One of which is, everything is so expensive here.  Go into the local grocery, everything is pretty much $5.00, whether it is a can of beans or a tube of toothpaste.  That adds up in quite a hurry.  Needless to say, now I ration toilet paper, paper towels, shampoo, etc.  Things I thought nothing of wasting in the past.  Not to mention, there is no trash pick up either, so…. I actually need transportation to take my garbage the 7 miles to the dump.  I have become somewhat of a dumpster diver also.  LOL!  There are no actual dumpsters, but hey… you spot a good chair, a pot for a plant, a nice piece of wood, etc you grab it for sure.  Kinda fun actually.

Then there is power and water.  Since I am operating on Solar power and a Cistern… there is a limit.  I no longer keep all the lights on for no reason.  When I get my new generator, I will have to unplug my fridge at night so I don’t lose power by morning… crazy!  I have to check my “numbers” a couple times a day to see if I need to crank up the generator.  It is an efficient low cost system and I like it.  I can’t take frequent long showers or a bath… I have a “limited” amount of water.  Luckily it has rained a lot in the past week, my cisterns are full.

So, things I never even thought of, or basically took for granted are now an issue.  Interesting!
