“Down Island” by Mark Hill
Worked on Gordy and Cathy’s internet a bit in the morning yesterday, then around noon, Danielle and I went to Marsh Harbour. It was laundry day. Fun times. I am still trying to get my internet to work… We arrived back at the Pub around 4:45, just in time for happy hour.
Danielle Rob headed back to the boat early, I hung around the pub for a bit.
I met Mark Hill – A solo sailer, from Jacksonville, FL. Nice guy. He sails 6 months out of the year and volunteers at home the balance of the year…
He wrote a book, “Down Island” – I am planning on reading it soon. It is available on Amazon.
I have decided to start a series… Hippie Duck Adventures – took some great photos today. Should be fun!
Visit to Hope Town
Yesterday, Cathy and Gordy invited me along to Marsh Harbour to catch the ferry to Hope Town. That is always a fun trip. It was a beautiful day. We picked up a couple golf carts and went to lunch at “On Da Beach”. Fresh Wahoo salad. The fish is so fresh is almost doesn’t taste like fish… amazing! Then we went to White Sound to look at the Yachts that were in port. On our way we saw the construction from where the road was destroyed from Irene. We watched the back hoes work a while. Next stop was “FireFly” I had no idea that the Firefly sweet tea was created right here. Wow!
We caught the 5:15 ferry back to Marsh Harbour, stopped at “Snappas” for Pizza. Tuesday is Pizza night at Snappas. We finally made it home around 9. Slept like a baby, found a piece of plywood to place under my skinny futon. Ahhhhh!
Settling in…
The day before yesterday, after my 6 mile walk, I was worthless. I had played tennis everyday before then and it hit me… I didn’t feel well. I ached all over, so I slept almost all day. I went to Pete’s at 5 of course to meet Danielle and Rob. They left around 6:15 and Kaye (another home owner) showed up. I had the pleasure of getting to know her a bit over her dinner. I came home and had soup and went to bed around 9.
OK… at 6:30 in the evening last night I was ready to retire. The sun had set and it was dark. I am having a bit of internet trouble, so I had to spend the day up on the hill at my friends house working. I need to be able to get on the internet at my own pad, so I will have to work that out somehow. It’s was too windy and a bit chilly to go to the pub to work. (There is a great signal there). I had been bundled up all day in my sweat pants and sweat shirt. It got down to 52 last night – that’s colder here than at home for some reason.
I did break out the guitar yesterday and at least tune it.
I made myself some spaghetti for dinner, yummy! I settled in reading, “The Poisonwood Bible”… It’s starting off quite intriguing. I have several other books that I am reading, “Respectable Sins” and “A Bell Ringing in the Empty Sky, the Best of the Sun” (many short stories).
There is a quote in the front of the “Sun” compilation that I love…
“Be patient toward all that is unsolved in your heart and try to love the questions themselves like locked rooms and like books that are written in a foreign tongue. Do not now seek the answers which cannot be given to you because you would not be able to live them. And the point is, to live everything. Live the questions now. Perhaps you will then gradually, without noticing, live along some distant day into the answer.”
There is something to ponder!
It’s a beautiful day today… I am at the pub working, the view is amazing and the weather divine. Gordy just passed by on his four wheeler… They are going to hope town on the ferry and I am invited… ok… I’m out! I will take photos.
Kajooks
Yeah… I am finally moved in! I am living in Kajooks on the harbour. Last year, it was the Love Shack on the top of the Island, so I will get a different feel. I like it. I am working on one issue… Internet only works on the porch… nothing I can’t figure out. I am not complaining, rest assured! Most people that come to an Island want to escape the Internet … I need it to continue making a living.
Below are a few photos of my home and transportation. I have very little power (all solar of course), a gas fridge and oven, and only an outdoor shower (Which I love) The view is to die for and I can pull the kayak out and drag it right into the harbour on any given day. I have played tennis last 6 days, which I never did last year… that has been fun! Joe is gone today though, so it’s back to mainly biking and walking. He gave me permission to use the courts, gotta find an opponent. That shouldn’t be too hard.
ITSO
OK… my middle child accused me of having this now, real, illness! ITSO – “Inability to switch off”! Although, I am in complete denial, she is right! I have it and I have it bad! I realized how severe my case of ITSO was today, when for some unknown reason, my brand spanking new mac computer would not boot up. WHAT?
I tried not to panic, I immediately grabbed my ipad (LOL) and got online looking for solutions to my issue. Thinking all along that I would have to call apple on my iphone (LOL again)…
Then I was strong and finally able to just, let it be. “Switch off!”
I got on my bike and went for a nice ride. Then I went up the hill to visit some friends. Next, I prepared some lunch and laid in the sun and started reading an actual book! Not a downloaded version on my ipad either. I did listen to some music on my iphone while reading… oops!
All the while, praying my computer would mysteriously come back on… and if not what were the scenarios? Let’s see… I have an old back up computer at home, that I just had a hard drive installed this week… I could have it shipped over and it would arrive about the time I need to return to the states. I could have it shipped to friends who will be returning to the Island and they could bring it… Hell… I might have to fly and get it myself. I am afraid I would, too!
Yep, I have it! Guilty as charged! Good news is… I got my fix! I found a solution on the apple website and I am up and running once again! I think that is good, or is it? Answer is still yet to be determined!
Photo of the Day
This was taken in Treasure Cay. After taking West and Marie to the airport for their return to the states and a successful grocery shopping trip in Marsh Harbour, my friend Danielle and I decided to run away to Treasure Cay for a nice lunch. It was a beautiful day for a drive and a beach side lunch. It will happen again!
